The Harambee Cultural Workshop

Information Page

Who We Are

The Harambee Cultural Workshop (HCW) is a representative body whose membership comprises of members from some of the individual Afrikan cultural performing groups in the southern region of Trinidad.
It is one of our objectives to:
·        Encompass as many groups from the region as far as is practical, then
·        Sweep north through our twin-island state doing the same, thus
·        Making the HCW truly representative of the groups of the Afrikan                     cultural performing fraternity.
It is our intention to revive the traditional cultural practices that appear to be dead or dying. The Tamboo Bamboo, Yorouba traditional ritual song and dance,
Tobago Tambrine etc, are some of the areas where focus will be directed.

Research and information-gathering will effectively be commissioned in the near future. The results/outcomes will be used to establish our archives and database for international use. As such, you are invited to contact us  if you would like to share information that will help us achieve our objectives.

One aspect of the Harambe skillbase encompasses drum makers, drumology instructors, dance instructors, a music instructor, a percussion specialist, fabric designers, costume designers, and an Afrikan Chief.

The HCW made its 1-hour radio presentation on May 25 2004 - Afrikan Liberation Day. The 1-hour presentation on Power102's - The Black Agenda - was also carried across the Internet.

The HCW has begun visiting the various local and other Caribbean communities. One of our executive members has recently returned from Guyana. More about that later.

The majority of current HCW members range in experience from 15 years to 25 years. Some of them have also been performing internationally. One of our wish is to share our diverse experience with the rest of the local communities, and the rest of the world.
In order that continuity be had for the maintenance of our legacy, the HCW is currently analyzing its strategies to begin developing our youth performing unit. We critically place emphasis on the development of our youth.

It is the intention of the HCW to travel the cultural performance road in order to take the people to the natural beauty of the Afrikan cultural performing arts. We will be diverse in our presentations to the rest of the world. Our diversity however, shall not remove us from the nature of which we are an integral part. We shall therefore stand out as part of our natural environment.
